ABOUT SHUMEN
Shumen is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria. People inhabited the area for more than 3200 years. The town is situated in a picturesque valley in Northeastern Bulgaria. Shumen is a town of long history, where you can visit interesting cultural and architectural monuments, among them the exceptionally beautiful houses - museum of influential Bulgarians from the period of National Revival, many other museums and galleries. Shumen is sited on an important transport junction - it lies on the main route between Varna and Sofia and is served by numerous trains and busses serving the city. The town is located on the main highways Sofia-Varna and Ruse-Burgas-Istanbul. The Shumen region is distinguished with rich historic and cultural heritage, a factor of paramount importance for the development of cultural tourism. In the region there are interesting places that worth visiting and beautiful nature that can turn into the perfect place for you to take a rest from the hustle and bustle of the town. There are also a lot of prerequisites for the development of the economy in the region.Places of interest are the Monument "1300 years Bulgaria", the fortress of Shumen, the natural park of "Kyoshka". Few kilometers away from the city is situated the unique the rock relief called "Madarski Konnik", which means "Madara Rider" or "Madara Horseman". It is an early medieval large rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of Madara. The relief depicts a majestic horseman 23 måters above ground level in an almost vertical 100-metre-high cliff. The horseman is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. An eagle is flying in front of the horseman and a dog is running after him. The scene symbolically depicts a military triumph. The monument is dated back to circa 710 AD and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979.
The region's largest business sector is "trade, repair of automobiles and home appliances" at [50%], followed by heavy and light manufacturing [12%], third [9%] is the combination of "hotels, hostel and food service", "transportation and communications, travel agencies and tourism", and "real property operations, and rent". The strongest branch for municipality is light industry; represented by manufacture, textile, tailoring, food and tobacco industries, and construction.
